Welcome Home
03:12
|
|||
we’ll give you our money, tax all that you can take
drain from the poor, let the rich get the big breaks
then spend it to bail out the banks and greedy ceos
wage war on the poorest, our streets filled with hunger
debt rises still higher as the working fall under
corporations are people but people are illegal
come on down, come on
priests and kings and presidents
the industry’s irrelevant
hope is where the lost are allowed to come home
banks and bosses and big box stores
modern-day slaves of the corporate wars
hope is where the lost are allowed to come home
welcome home, welcome home
when will we all come home
welcome home

Get By
04:10
|
|||
Called me up the other day, said he didn’t know what to say/ was worried that his folks would hate him if they knew he felt this way/ Lyin’ ‘bout the love he gives, he wants to end the life he lives/ the best that I can do is be here by his side and simply sit/ ”What happened to the home I knew,” he cries/ “If I was different would they love me too? ‘Cause I’m...
Gettin’ by, gettin’ by, gettin’ by on heartache
We gon’ try, we gon’ try until our backs break just to make it
Gettin’ by, gettin’ by, gettin’ by on heartache
Whatever it takes, just to live...
Living out of desperation, all too common situation/ poverty’s a home invasion, every step alienated/ woken by a cop with his hand on his sidearm/ blinded by a spotlight, sleepin’ out in my car/ so very far from the home I knew this time/ what should I do when I’m...
Gettin’ by, gettin’ by, gettin’ by on heartache
We gon’ try, we gon’ try until our backs break just to make it
Gettin’ by, gettin’ by, gettin’ by on heartache
Whatever it takes, just to live
maybe the love of your life left without even an answer/ maybe the doc walked and said i’m sorry son, it's cancer/ maybe the bills are due, the rent is due, the car won't start, your sky once blue/ has turned a grey that turns away all fading hope from yesterday/ so you get up, and breathe, and try/ ‘cause sometimes that’s all you can do to get by
Gettin’ by, gettin’ by, gettin’ by on heartache
We gon’ try, we gon’ try until our backs break, and we’re gonna make it
Gettin’ by, gettin’ by, gettin’ by on heartache
Tomorrow is a brand new day

Pigs on Patrol
03:10
|
|||
Pigs on patrol, they will take hold of you
No one will know, they want control of you
Hear the howling, see the lights
They have the might to take your rights
Found on the wrong side of the block
Hear the shots, watch ‘em drop
Off the record, out of sight
Pigs on patrol, tell me who owns you
Won’t matter the vote, they’ll do what they want to do
A slap on the wrist if there’s a witness
Neighborhood watch, you’re on their hit list
A badge and a gun better run
Where’s the fun in due process, when the day’s done
Watch this
Pigs on patrol, and big brother knows you
Justice is cold from the gang of old boys in blue
With racist eyes they’ll scan the night
Crack down on the poor, turn down the lights
Even if one or two get the boot
They don’t need proof or the truth
The uniform says they’re right
If the law doesn’t serve the people, then one day
We the people will be the ones who lock the law away
Pigs on patrol, tell me who owns you

Company Town
03:40
|
|||
In this Company Town it’s hard to get bored
When we can head on down to the Company Store, but
They raised the prices when they raised our wages, so
There’s really not much here we can afford (yeah, yeah)
In this Company Town all the streets stay clean, and
The security guards, well they’re not that mean
At least if you’ve got the right documentation
Thank the CEO for my occupation (yeah, yeah)
In this Company Town every worker’s in debt
And we live to work and will work till we’re dead
But it’s hard to believe in the Company Dream
When this Company Town is always painted red (yeah, yeah)
In this Company Town, well you’ve gotta stay grounded
We’ve grown so large since the day we were founded
Generations of families grown up in this Town
Working hard to make our own way out (yeah, yeah)
In this Company Town my friends got let go
Along with half the folks ‘round here I know
In this Company Town I’ll work till I bleed
Then take on another shift so it don’t happen to me (yeah, yeah)
From this Company Town I will soon set out
I’ll hitch a ride anywhere any day now
And I promise you won’t see me me comin’ back around
In this Company Town we’re all working to death
In this Company Town there are no jobs left
We salute the Logo, we know though, we’re solo
When it all breaks down in this Company Town

Constance
04:18
|
|||
In and out
Your breath is a runaway
Scared and so far from home
While faith and doubt
Conspire to educate
About all you don’t want to know
And Constance is writing your epitaph
Says there’s no sense in trying again
But Constance has eyes like a storm cloud
That keeps thundering away in your head
Break it down
You never meant to say goodbye
You never meant not to know just what to say
When every joy is paper thin
You die every day to dive back in
But you can never be where Constance lives
From a thousand miles away
And Constance is writing your epitaph
Says there’s no sense in trying again
But Constance, she shines like a sunrise
When your heart only knows how to set
So Constance is writing your epitaph
Says there’s no sense in trying to hold
Constance has a voice like ice on the water
Cracking with spring and still and beautifully cold
So Constance is writing your epitaph
Says there’s no sense in trying again
But Constance still sounds like a day dream
Asking if you want to be awakened

Blue Collar Mama
03:42
|
|||
She’s a blue collar mama workin the factory line/ Taking on extra shifts with good work hard to find/ Got mouths to feed and check to check, bills bleed her out/ If she can’t make rent they’ll be on the street this time, no doubt/ All alone raisin’ kids, she does the best that she can/ Don’t need any hand outs from any hook-up, look-down man/ She’s tryin to save up, pave their way up to a better end/ maybe it’s somewhere around the bend, we’ll see, ‘cause she’s...
A blue collar mama raised just down the block
With big dreams and big bones and A+ thoughts
And two little boys in a room too small
Gramma taught her, ya’ll stand up tall against the wall
Workin’ to make a home and a life and dream/ PTA, double shifts, hand-me-downs and the screams/ and the shots - on the block, tryin’ to get out this neighborhood for good/ But her way is blocked/ by a check - that’s half what the men get for the same work, but it’s not shame work/ She holds her head high even when it’s covered with sweat and dirt ‘cause she knows/ what the scars on her skin and the stains on her clothes show/ she’ll do whatever she has to for the ones she loves back at home [1c]
A blue collar mama with the city on her shoulders
Not getting any younger, always feelin too much older
Takin it day by day, but she’ll always find a way
Holds her babies in her arms, sayin’ it’s all gonna be okay, be okay
She’s a blue collar mama with a pink-slip in hand/ Company demands, yknow, i’m sure you understand ma’am/ She’s thinkin of drinkin’ but instead she heads on home/ Sittin on the red line, readin the headlines all alone/ All she wants is to be someone her kids can look up to/ That night her son says, “I wanna grow up to be just like you/ ‘Cause you’re my blue collar mama raised just down the block/ I like when we play at the park and when we go on long walks/ I know you’re workin’ hard for me and my little brother/ You’re my mama, I love you, and I wouldn’t want any other”

I sat quiet and bit my lip
Leaned in and clenched my fists
Blinked back the tears and gripped
The edge of my seat as you recounted
Every tale of the things he did
Every touch for his every whim
All ashamed but all for him
Just to feel wanted
Careful not to turn your back
You look around for a surprise attack
With every window painted black
In a new town that you almost trusted
Run from sleep for your haunted dreams
Fingerprints on your blood-stained sleeves
Look at who you said you’d never be
Just to feel wanted
Taking chances, backward glances and suggestions
(Backing away, our every touch is murder)
Dance to the tune of our immodest indiscretions
(We say we’d never really want to hurt her)
Reaching out hands to hold, blockade her convalescence
(So we disguise it to shame our neighbor)
If we shout loud enough, we’ll never learn our lesson
(And close our eyes and use our sighs to blame her)
What will we see when we’re confronted
What will we see when we’re confronted
What will we see when we’re confronted
With all we do just to feel wanted

Could Be
05:42
|
|||
Did you eat today
Did you wake up in a bed
Did you go to take a shower
And feel warm water on your head
Did you drive here in your car
And pay for gas all by yourself
Did you go to school when you were younger
And wish you were anywhere else
It could be you, it could be me; It could be you, it could be me
Did you eat today
Where’d you get those fancy clothes
And all those pretty things that fill up your house and your time
Must be nice to have all of those
I’m not trying to point my finger
Except for right back at me
I just feel like something might be wrong here
You can point where you like if you agree
It could be you, it could be me; It could be you, it could be me
What would you give to give it all for the other
What would you give to give it up for another...one
What would you give to give it all for the other
Would you give it all

From Nine
04:06
|
|||
Like leaves carried swiftly on the breeze/ My cold feet carry me back to the beach/ With my hands held frozen at my sides/ Empty otherwise, my mind lost in your eyes/ Looking away for the very last time/ But it’s not like we both didn’t try// Like leaves scattered wildly on the street/ These pages of poetry, imperfect chemistry/ Line my floor with fiction and fact/ Topographical maps, these scars trace back and back/ And our flaws remain all intact/ But what’s so wrong with that
In the absence of a porch light, in the absence of a shore line
In the absence of your hello, I fall alone to goodbye
And some may say our dreams were born to die
Once thought so was I, but now I’m falling down from nine
Like leaves crowning courts in autumn/ In time we all come to fall down/ Learning how to bow/ before we learn how to reign/ The sound of my name on your lips/ Is the kiss of royalty spelt out in plain english/ So you can probably guess what my one wish is// Like leaves crunched beneath the soles on concrete/ We never knew defeat so sweet/ So farewell to creaking branches and deeper roots/ Pick the fairest fruit before the season is gone/ though the scent of the leaves on the breeze carries on in the winter wind’s wolf song
like leaves fall from trees at the breeze slightest brush/ couldn’t keep in touch, ‘cause it still hurt way too much/ and i think i see you everywhere but then of course i don’t/ think if i call, you might pick up but then of course you won’t/ ‘cause i may have run farther but you still ran harder/ and both of us have been running since before this started/ as the spring sun shines, i never once lost hope for the one called nine/ guess I forgot what I’ve been running from this whole time...

Thursday
02:48
|
|||
The world came to an end on a Thursday
Guess it wasn’t that bad
Wasn’t even close to the worst day
That I’ve ever had
I suppose we all should’ve noticed
When the smoke burnt our eyes
Or at very least when all the animals died
The world came to an end with a whimper
Though more like a sigh
Like greenhouse gas or perhaps
The moment passing us by
It all happened so fast
Yet we’d been waiting so long
I don’t mean to sound disappointed
But hey, my planet’s gone
The world came to an end, and now it’s over
Guess we all should have known
What’s the point in ruling the whole world
When it leaves you alone
And the few of us that have made it
Just signed a decree
Never again to start fighting
Well, I give that one a week
The world came to an end, and I remember
The day that you left
Said you were off to earn my freedom
Only to earn your death
All for a richer man’s war
For some land that’s now lost
What were you fighting for
And was it worth the cost
The world came to an end last Thursday
Guess it wasn’t that bad
Wasn’t even close to the worst day
That I’ve ever had

Brandywine

All we ever do - all day, all night
Is run around and play like we’re alright
As I face my fears in a losing battle, I’m shaking in my shell and I might
Be about to give up, can’t give what you’re expecting
Or live up to standards I’ve set for myself
Trying so hard to be, to please everyone else but me...
I fear the dark, I fear the day
I fear the stakes have all been raised
I fear I don’t have what it takes
But please relax for madness sake
I’ve heard some voices, seen some sights
Waking nightmares, sunlit frights
For long enough that I can say
I’m not crazy, no, I just need a break
All I ever want - inside my head
Is an escape from the pain of grief and dread
Yet here I am instead, with a blade against my arm again and
I don’t wanna die, but I’m tired of fighting
Sickness in my mind makes it hard to see
That the only one I can ever change is me
I know I’ve gotta change, but I don’t know I’ve got the know how/ but a little bit of rain doesn’t mean a hurricane now/ can i fall down and still keep my head up/ when i feel so out of touch or crushed by way too much/ pressure, stressors, can’t catch my breath or reflect under duress/ I guess my best bet’s to keep pressing on/ five minutes at a time down the road I go/ when all I know is...
We are all worth the time it takes us
We are worth more than our mistakes
Worth the uphill climb, so can we
Finally give ourselves a break
We are all worth the help we’re needing
We are worth more than the scars still bleeding
We are all here and all human beings
We won’t give up or give in to beatings
We are all worth the conversation
Worth the reconciliation
Worth a second chance to make it
We can make it, we’re gonna make it
We’re not crazy, no we just need a break

Alarm vs. The Ambience
04:58
|
|||
Is anywhere too far? Is any time too fast?
I wonder if we two are both too afraid to start something that might not last
Where have we gone? Tell me, are we coming back?
‘Cause I’ve been starin’ for too long at this tree trunk covered o’er with tire tracks
There’s a fog in this room. It feels like I’m drowning
In a portable, plastic tomb, my heartbeat fast surrounding (hear it pounding?)
Oh we all
sometimes fall
down with you
Oh we all
sometimes fall
down here too
Is anything I’ve seen worthy of such ignoring or condemning?
There’s a warm mansion, but down the street children sleep
with no shoes on their feet or food to eat (while we argue about semantics)
Call me foolish, please, call me ignorant of the truth you see so plainly, I’m sure
Wrap it up in grey-shaded statistics, moralistic activist wishes,
another issue that I’m bound to ignore

Like a Jacket
06:26
|
|||
I remember when you were my friend
And life was better
I always knew which way the wind blew
From simply lookin’ at the weather
Don't need to hear you say
That time can make things change
I want to wear the sunshine like a jacket
Head out on a bike made of crazy dreams
With a helmet of only my head in the clouds
And see where this windin’ road takes me
I remember when your rules would bend
Now I watch 'em breakin'
But I'm standing on more than a song
So I can sing when the earth starts shakin’
Don't need to hear you say
That time will make us change
I want to wear the sunshine like a jacket
Head out on a bike made of crazy dreams
With a helmet of only my head in the clouds
And see where this windin’ road takes me
Don’t need to hear you say
That time has made us change
I’ve seen you walk away
Enough to know
I want to wear the sunshine like a jacket
Head out on a bike made of crazy dreams
With a helmet of only my head in the clouds
And see where this windin’ road takes me
